I'm here, again. It's been like two years since I had an open entry, but I've been here the whole time, just posting on private while life lifed. I live further west now and have taken lots of weird turns as usual. Still crazy and disabled; still so, so gay; still married; still a nerd, still listened to Wumpscut in my car after dropping my parents--now in their dementia eras--off at the airport when their visit ended this week.
On to today! I took a day off from my usual hustling and bustling to decompress from having my parents up here. I lounged about, read some comics and manga (Absolute Martian Manhunter vol. 1 and re-reading vol. 2 of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon). Continued with Strange Weather in Toyko (about halfway through) and finally started Gabino Iglesias's The Devil Takes You Home, which I've been meaning to read forever. Yesterday I finished Jane Marie's Selling the Dream, which was a fun (though in a what-even-is-this-hellscape way), unabashedly biased history of MLMs and their place in our communities/lives. I enjoyed it, though it was a bit repetitive at points.
I took the day off from exercise as well, which was harder to do than I thought, but that's not that surprising given how problematic my Thing with exercise can be. But I have decided, I think, that I'd like to start rollerskating again, so when I have the funds I'm going to the shop to get new skates so I can wobble around my neighborhood instead of walking once in awhile.
The other thing I did today was play through the tutorial in MTG Arena. I've wanted to try MtG for years, but for reasons I never did. I heard about Arena and it seemed like an accessible way to at least try out the game before I head down to ye olde games shoppe and plunk down a bunch of money on cards I have no idea how to use. There is a weekly beginner-friendly event at the shop I really like, but it's on a night that I can't make until December since I have Japanese class (finally finally taking Japanese!), so even though I know it's not the same, I thought I'd check it out anyway. I really liked it! It was fun, and doing the tutorial made learning the turn sequence and such easier because as we all probably know, when nerd friends excitedly teach you about their thing, they often avalanche you with information, most of which isn't really useful to you yet. I find this overwhelming, but I don't have friends anyway. I liked it, want to keep playing it, will eventually play with real cards once (again) I have the funds for them and can make it to a night or event.
Lastly, I'm doing electrolysis on my face and have noticed that it's more sensitive when I shave (I have monthly appointments, so I have to shave still in between, though I try not to do that every day if I can help it). This is a conundrum, as I've struggled to find a nourishing/restorative skincare routine that works now that I am solidly perimenopausal and everything that worked five minutes ago* is apparently out the window. (If you are new here, I'm nonbinary, had a few years on testosterone, turns out my face hates having facial hair and also it is not super ideal for my preferred presentation, so I am getting rid of it. No longer on testosterone, but still very much in the trans umbrella or whatever we are calling it these days.) Everything I've tried so far has led to breakouts and/or irritation. I know I should see a dermatologist about it, but that is a costly process and also I hate having to explain my gender things. So I'm just going to whine about it here and continue endlessly experimenting.
*The older I get, the more "five minutes" seems to warp and stretch. Right now, five minutes seems to equal about 15 years.
